We’re taking part in Hares About Town this Summer!
Coming to Southend-on-Sea from 1st July 2021
We are excited to announce that Choice will be taking part in the Hares about Town trail starting 1st July 2021 in Southend-on-Sea!
In partnership with Wild in Art and Havens Hospice the trail will be hopping into action from July until September 2021. Weaving its way across Southend-on-Sea for 10 weeks, each Hare has been individually designed by an artist and sponsored by a local business. The fun and free family trail is perfect for local people and visitors to explore and enjoy this Summer!
Our wonderful hare has been created by local artist Lynne Campen, we can’t wait to show you more and unveil our ‘English Country Garden’ hare.
About Lynne Campen – the artist behind the wonderful English Country Garden Hare
I have always painted since my childhood. I am self-taught, initially using library books, then the internet, teaching myself different techniques and experimenting with different styles and media. I now paint mainly in oils and acrylics – painting “en plein air” whenever possible. I love to be outside, in front of my subject, with the challenges that the weather and changing light brings. It is something that I hope to do more this year that now lockdown is over!
Where did you get your inspiration for the hare design?
My hare design idea was to feature as many garden birds, bugs and animals that I could. I thought this would be a nice idea so children could try to spot and name the creatures featured. I also wanted to highlight what a diverse range of animals and birds that visit our gardens in England and how we should take the time to observe them, care for them and basically just appreciate how much joy they actually bring into our lives. I didn’t realise how relevant this would be when the pandemic hit, and we were spending so much time outdoors and in our gardens over the last year. I am a great lover of nature and try to encourage as many bugs, birds and animals into my own garden as possible.
Where did you start when it came to painting the hare?
My design colour palette was based on the layout of a rainbow – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Starting from the base up I tried to group colours of flowers and animals together. The base featured red poppies, a robin, merging into orange nasturtiums, the fox, then into yellow etc. Of course, when I submitted my design for the hare back in September 2019 I didn’t know how relevant the rainbow image would become as a connection to the NHS!
How long did it take you to complete the hare?
I completed the Hare over lockdown last summer and it was returned to the Royals in Southend to be varnished last October.
What interested you in becoming part of the Hares about Town project?
I was interested in taking part in the Hares about Town event after seeing a Facebook post from the Southend Arts Council. The challenge of painting a huge 6ft Hare really appealed to me! The whole event and the idea of auctioning the Hare at the end to raise funds for the hospice is a fabulous idea.
